The word evokes such a complex melange of feelings in me -- and no doubt anyone spending more then a modicum of measure thinking about theirs will find much to believe. We can an approach our future with fear and trepidation or wish and expectation -- yet either attitude is largely based not on the future but how we perceive what lies ahead. Optimism and pessimism the words we use to describe our attitudes towards events -- or rather our tendencies in interpretting events -- colour our perceptions of the future quite profoundly. Interestingly while they may alter the "choices" we make as we continually act through the "show" they do not directly affect the events that the future holds.
For the first time in my life. I'm looking for a job. It's a very novel feeling. My CVs have never been a particularly serious focus in my life. I've prepared one for medical educate and for residency/fellowship -- but they barely ascertain. I don't understand bear on construction any more than I understand quantum tunneling (okay maybe more of the second than the first) so I'll be reading up on resumes and trying to figure out how to alter one that reflects my professional development and professional interests.
Where to live what to do and what kind of work/research balance do I be to undergo -- how many hours to bring home the bacon.. all of it very nebulous. It's a strange feeling indeed. Praying for guidance is certainly a big part of what I'm up to these days.
I guess it's moments like these that some might be tempted to check their horoscopes and fortunes... So why is it that people want to know their futures? What do you do with that kind of information? One of the ironies about the difference between knowing about a future and living through it is that without living through it it's hard to understand it. If you were to be told about your present life when you were 5 years it would be incomprehensible. In some ways that's always true -- your present self and future self are different entities.
You know scripture never tells us that sorcery or divination or fortune telling doesn't work. I'll leave it to you to end whether you think that divination works... But the story of Simon the Sorceror and the magicians of Egypt seem to tell that magic can work. So what is it about divination/scrying that offends God? For the show discussion we're just focusing on reading the future or gaining "secret knowledge" through sorcery.
(say that there are definitely ambiguities concerning "divination". The Apostles cast lots to determine who would replace Judas Iscariot. The Urim and Thumim were used by Aaron. Moses and their successors to make decisions -- so casting lots or rolling cut were not precisely divination (probably) -- though geomancy seems similar in form to me. So there are definitely some areas that can be discussed in greater detail.)
The first line of reasoning probably extends from the fact that most ideas about divination involve consulting a spirit that isn't God. Trafficking with unHoly spirits probably offends God for rather obvious reasons. But technically Horoscopes and Zodiac kinds of information are not technically consulting with Spirits... This is particularly adjust of Chinese Numerology which purports to be an analysis of life paths for those that were born at particular points of time and space.
The second lie which I evaluate is the real reason is that trying to map out one's future using either Horoscopes and other forms is that it can regenerate prayer and God-seeking with a much more self-centered way of discernment. The cerebrate in much of divination/fortune telling is the challenge. "What's in store for
The root of sin (in a conservative Christian articulation) is arguably the ego placing one's own ordain in the judgment seat usurping God's rightful displace in your life. It is the self that wars against God rebelling against the sovereign of the universe declaring willful independence from His command. The primary concern of fortune telling is seeking knowledge of the future to act care of oneself. It replaces believe in God's providence and provision. In my opinion it is this that makes divination so odious to God.
Now before anyone makes any additional comments about the context of those two verses. I'll state it here: These verses are open in Leviticus 19 a difficult passage due to its numerous injunctions some of which are now felt to be largely anachronistic by most people as always raising the question of -- if some are context sensitive "rules" how do you know which ones still bear on and which ones don't?
I personally desire rare meat breaking 26. I definitely wear clothing made out of different materials and I've definitely seen mules. Anyone familiar with Ligers and Tigons?
( - Interesting link about translation regarding practitioners of magic. When you construe it say that it is from a theologically liberal/Wicca friendly place)
Suggests that mal-intentioned spellcraft is punishable by death.. but that's getting farther afield from divination. I think there's enough consistency in the biblical injunctions against divination to believe that it isn't spiritually healthy for the Christian. I'm not entirely sure what to do with Numerology -- but I tend to believe that the overall message is that we ought to desire God's guidance rather than the guidance of astrologers/astrology or numerology.
All the places you've listed appear great - does location be in your field? Are you only confined to where you would desire to be? Or are you looking for certain facilities that fit your criteria? Maybe a more basic challenge: what are your criteria?JD and MBA are both quite useful though I imagine the MBA may cut you. What about MA in Anthropology or other liberal arts?
I be to be in a similar place. God has brought me to a place to be open to relocation. Real specific eh? If I did not have such undescribable peace from the ennoble. I would be tempted to discern for myself.
Funny you should bring up Wicca: I attended a reunion with my closest friends from high school last week in Vancouver. One of my friends looked at me and almost immediately said. 'you're comfort a christian.' with a bit of distaste - this was part of her greeting to me after not having seen me for the last 16 years. She's Wiccan and does consult regularly with her animate guides. The spirits had recognized the Spirit. I've also had other experiences with Wicca in the past and I truly believe that this write of divination opens us up for spirits other than the Holy Spirit to dwell in us and this hold would ultimately blind the person from seeing God beyond mere recognition. It's way beyond just not being healthy for us. (You can ask me offline about my experiences.. let's just say spiritual warfare is indeed real.)
