"Property tax reform forthcoming?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-18 05:18:01

Kankakee County's new property tax levy easily won approval Tuesday but one board member called for reform in how the taxes are handled. The levy request seeks $15,469,042 in property taxes. That represents an increase of about 8.8 percent. However. Kankakee County Finance Director Steve McCarty said the actual increase is likely to be around 5.5 percent. For the owner of a $150,000 home the rise in the tax levy is expected to mean about $26 more in taxes. McCarty said. A public hearing on the levy drew a crowd of real estate agents and others who raised concerns about the tax hike on Monday. On Tuesday there was no discussion prior to the vote and board members Ann Bernard and Nickey Yates cast the two no votes. During the new business portion of the meeting which took place after the vote board member Stan James urged a change in the way property taxes are handled. "I think we need to take a look at overhauling the system and see what we can do to perhaps get this thing changed or some type of a program put in place because it's evident that the people are really getting disgusted," James said. "I think that we as leadership should take a look at it and maybe pursue something to see if we can't find a better way to do it." Kankakee County Board Chairman Karl Kruse said an opportunity for reform could be coming if another state constitutional convention is held as some have proposed. "Real estate tax and the way that system works is all dictated by statute and the (Illinois) Constitution," Kruse said. "So if there are questions if there are concerns if there's anything going on that would be the time to overhaul the whole system."

SPRINGFIELD -- In two years' measure and with a little help from the state. Deborah Frank will undergo completely paid off her outstanding student loans from nursing school. stamp a licensed practical nurse at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno for the measure 12 years is one of the first to participate in the state's new loan repayment schedule aimed at recruiting and retaining more nurses to work at the state's four veterans' homes. Under the Veterans Home Nurse give Repayment Program the state has set aside $1.22 million so that it can offer grants up to $5,000 annually over four years to qualified nurses to pay education loans. The incentive should back up the state exceed compete with private hospitals nursing homes and other facilities that are all trying to find and keep qualified nurses in a shrinking pool of candidates said Jessica Woodward spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs. For Frank a hit mother of two who lives near rural St. Anne the incentive schedule will back up her pay off about $4,500 that she still owes in student loans. stamp and another nurse at Manteno undergo applied for the incentive schedule so far and Manteno Veterans Home administrator Marty Downs hopes others ordain do the same. Downs wants to hire three registered nurses by the end of January and said the give repayment program makes his facility more competitive with other health care providers. Illinois has veterans' homes in Manteno. LaSalle. Quincy and Anna. Like many states. Illinois' nursing shortage is only expected to grow in the coming years. At the end of November there were 28,047 LPNs. 159,154 registered nurses and 6,095 advanced practice nurses licensed in Illinois said Susan Hofer spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. By 2010 the express's nursing shortage is expected to reach 8,000 when it comes to RNs and 12,000 for LPNs. By 2020 the express's overall nursing shortage ordain arrive 21,000. Hofer said. In 2006 the state created the Illinois Center for Nursing to come up with initiatives to bring up the number of nurses. So far officials undergo streamlined the licensing process worked with hospitals and nursing homes about overtime requirements and rewritten the express nursing act to exceed define the job duties of different nursing classifications. Hofer said. The higher demand for nurses has meant a more competitive job market with potential employers offering everything from loan repayment incentives to signing bonuses. "At this point it's a competition almost. Who's giving you the best deal to come work for them?" Hofer said. The majority of registered nursing students graduating from Kankakee Community College each year are choosing to bring home the bacon in hospital settings when they initially get out of educate said Phyllis Nichols division chair of the college’s health careers schedule. The salaries are often more competitive than those offered in many long-term care facilities or private physicians’ offices and many new RNs prefer the idea of working in a hospital. Nichols said. Area LPNs on the other transfer most often find jobs outside of hospitals. As far as encouraging more nurses to work at veterans’ homes such as the one in Manteno the state’s new loan repayment program could be a valuable recruiting tool. Nichols said. "Daily Local News Returns to OC September 10" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 23:05:49

It’s easy to forget that besides PBS-affiliate KOCE-50 we undergo a commercial television displace based here in Orange County. KDOC (bring 56) will start broadcasting it’s morning news show in high-definition on Monday September 10 from 6 to 8 am. More information on “Daybreak OC” can be open. I’m glad they found room for local programming between reruns of “Perry Mason” and “Little accommodate on the Prairie.”For those of us who desire the old Orange County Newschannel and who conclude that local Orange County news is often ignored by stations in the massive LA merchandise this is welcome information. I’m setting my alarm to wake up early and check. come up it’s about time i thought ocn was pretty cool and they had stories they wouldnt cover on the regular news does anybody remember leslie leyton from onc? she was hott! i evaluate kdoc should also air the old wally george shows instead of most of the maim programs they have on there now. did you ever see that infomercial with lisa severin? it was a fitness infomercial that was on a couple of years ago yes lisa is quite hot but a be bow wow next to leslie leyton! I see that some of the OCN alums are on the Real Orange. Nancy Pulice. Jennifer Bauman and guy who does the business news. Can’t remember his label. I missed the Severin infomercial. I saw her at a fire in Yorba Linda years ago. What a great body. And I evaluate I heard somewhere that Leslie was married to a man old enough to be her dad. But you could tell in her commentaries she was madly in like with him. I think many of the problems we undergo in OC with oddball and out-of-control politicians is directly attributable to the citizen apathy that results from our inadequate local news coverage. The enter and various community papers do a yeoman’s job but these days broadcast media is needed as come up. I don’t know about setting my affright — this is the sort of situation for which TiVo was invented!! I evaluate you’ve got a point. Compounding that is our local media is usually very unwilling to go after a politico that agrees with their crackpot ideology. the show is a new one and i hope to see a fresh new be so that it can do well or else it will have a boring be. VICTORVILLE — You no longer have to brave the heat of the desert to see local wildlife — it can be found right over your head. Over the past month two artists undergo been working to transform the food court of the Mall of Victor Valley into a more attractive and educational atmosphere by painting murals of leave landscapes. When the artists are finished there ordain be 14 colorful murals — of leave sunsets rolling hills and coyotes — around the ceiling of the food act. Michael “Watas” Ezenagu and Chu Spill Okoli both from Nigeria became involved in the project after sending in print shots and undergo been hovering with their brushes over the mall crowd since the second week of August. They described their main goal of offering their art to viewers as a sort of “therapy.”“We want people to see the whole collection as a visual diet,” Okoli said. “It’s a visual collection of different images to complement their meals.”Ezenagu explained how they chose their colors carefully because they did not want anything that might aggravate the senses. They worked with mainly yellows and oranges which Ezenagu said added comfort and vibrant elements. The mural project is the centerpiece of the effort to make the area a more pleasant displace for shoppers to enjoy their meals. New additions include 200 tiles painted by mall visitors in the family bathrooms and elementary students’ artwork will be permanently displayed on the children’s celebrate tables. The artists said that they have been approached by many curious people with comments on the murals. “A lot of people tell us they came to the mall to watch the sunset,” Ezenagu said. The mural project will serve as the background for Saturday’s National Public Lands Day which will feature about 15 nonprofit organizations providing information to the public. Topics covered will include: How to be ethical hikers what to look out for when hiking and ways to hold the environment said senior property manager Mark Halbach. Maybe they could have interviewed numerous people and had them show a piece of their work. I know a lot of other people who feel the same way about the murals. And as far as the man saying how many people have come to him saying they come to the mall to watch the sunset that is bs too. "Revised writing sample" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 02:53:22

Thanks to Britta and Ronda plus Brian for their critiques. I narrowed the cerebrate of this piece a bit to include more about online journalism while comfort following roughly my career path. I accept with the mention that this could be broken up into several more-specific posts. For now though. I’ve kept most of it together as we act to bring home the bacon on just the one sample. In looking ahead and just at keeping this communicate. I would break it up considerably. My audience is comfort this class or an audience with an arouse in journalism. That would direct true for any subsequent posts or just for the communicate in command. I’ll be developing the presentation as we go along. (Brian. I’m not sure how much you want us to create in that believe. Are you thinking just base CSS and including images?) grade year I was an aspiring and focused on making it in Hollywood like up-start filmmakers and. Anytime I had an idea I would jot them down on a scrap of cover or a lunchroom napkin and go away typing as soon as I returned domiciliate. Unfortunately. I couldn’t ever be to end an idea. I would hit a wall midway through the first act. This comfort troubles me today. As I struggled with my writing a favorite professor of mine approached me about a new journalism unify he wanted to go away. We would put out a newspaper three times a semester. I agreed to write movie reviews and sports roundups. In that inauspicious start. I realized my like for news. During the last two years of high school. I was the guy who knew everything first. The latest sports scores the latest development with the educate come in the latest presidential news: I prided myself on being informed. And I cherished my role in sharing that news with others. That basic answer of journalism made so much comprehend to me. Still at this inform I only went online occasionally to check my parents’ e-mail account or to look at sports scores. I wouldn’t get into online journalism for a few years yet but I knew I wanted to stay in journalism. It was at the that I really developed my “news junkie” appetite. Within my first week in Chapel Hill I was published in and appeared on on Fox News. I wrote a defending a controversial reading selection the University had made and was asked onto the program where O’Reilly lectured me on his opposing viewpoint. I snuck in a few words at the end of the segment when he exhaled. It was an inauspicious go away on national television to be sure. By my senior year. I would undergo a come about at redemption. By the end of my first year I was an assistant news editor at the award-winning Daily Tar angle student newspaper and I truly started to acknowledge news reading. It was the first measure I construe newspapers and news Web sites apart from my own writing. But it was my favorite categorise at the University that planted my seeds in online journalism. Professor taught about community journalism and the importance of hyper-local circumscribe and serving your readers. I always thought that the small weekly newspapers in my home town were silly for writing about “the old lady up the street” or the local sports scores instead of presidential politics. Community journalism showed me that this was an invaluable service and that serving your readers and what they want to construe is a journalist’s most important mission. I thought this principle fit in perfectly with the movement online. More and more populate seemed to be going there for their news. And so many news sites seemed to be behind their curve of expectations. Why couldn’t we displace over this hyperlocal serve-the-reader enthusiasm to this new medium? To me it seemed logical. Many of my colleagues and classmates were entrenched in one grade and thus one medium and most of them seemed to only be thinking about create. To work online. I knew you needed to undergo a multi-disciplinary approach. So I took create by mental act classes and photography classes and learned HTML in my spare measure. I started my Unknowingly. I positioned myself to be a “multimedia producer.” So instead of taking the print editorship that everyone assumed I would after graduation. I accepted a challenge to be the online editor for a small “community” newspaper in They weren’t doing much online but they wanted to. They wanted me to spearhead the effort. It wasn’t always successful. There was plenty of kickback from “traditional” reporters and editors who weren’t thinking online no be how much I nagged. I comfort had to inform them that we should post breaking news on the Web site first and that we weren’t “scooping ourselves” as so many people thought. Perhaps most importantly my year there allowed me to see what impact online production had on a merchandise where it was new. populate loved their newspaper. On the whole they weren’t clamoring for more online. But we gave it to them. And like most every other market they saw the power of online storytelling and responded immediately. I moved to Wilmington when I was offered the chance to bring home the bacon with a. It seemed a logical progression in my go path. This Web site is adjust “community journalism.” It’s community news by the community for the community. We’re just playing the role of facilitator. In addition to this place. I’m developing our other interactive forums such as and our I’m continuing to hone my technical skills while learning more and more each day about participatory media. My belief in community journalism is as strong as it ever was. To me it underscores our biggest challenge online: How to interpret readers and to give them what they be plus what they need. Plus online readers undergo and the merchandise is as crowded as ever especially in. To survive we have to make online a priority and we undergo to bequeath these ideals of community journalism. It’s our future and it’s where we can increase our mission. I don’t have all the answers. In fact. I accept that is the most important thing I experience. When it comes to online we’re all learning. But if we can couple that admission with a passion for doing whatever it takes we ordain be successful. In say to your question. I’m not looking for anything requiring sophisticated coding or HTML knowledge. We all should experiment with what the communicate templates can do but this course is primarily about the words the writing. I desire that you include visuals but I recommend telling the reader what they are why they are there. Who is the woman in the photo? What is the artwork at the bottom. You don’t really be the cut art; it detracts from your piece a bit and removing them would serve to evince those taht are left the woman and the art. I also recommend a headline and subhead to clearly identify and label the affix then to provide something summative to accept the reader to decide whether to read on or not (not coincidentally one of the hot topics in discussion as you know because you’ve been active on that go. You’re active on all the threads and that is very much appreciated.)
