"Sylvia Easley, 9 Nov 1943 - 19 Dec 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-18 05:24:06

My aunt Sylvia died this morning. She told her (grown) kids to go to school asked for a drink of water and took her last breath. She had end-stage pancreatic cancer and multiple myeloma and she was at home in a hospital bed in her living room. We lived our lives at a great distance. Sylvia lived in Texas (San Antonio. Houston. Kerrville) ran a balloon delivery business married a few men (not at the same time) and loved fiercely. She was the strongest and most indomitable person I ever knew. The way she lived with cancer taught me how to do it: You live. Just keep living. Keep doing things you want to do. If your bones are brittle go to a water park and ride all the slides and then take meds and sleep all the next day. If people you love are there spend every ounce of your energy laughing with them and then take meds and sleep all the next day. Don't be "sick" with cancer. It's an annoyance. It thinks it's in charge so let it think so but quietly go about your own business and don't let it stop you. Until it's too strong. And then recognize that you're tired and lie back and marvel at the fresh clean taste of cold water and listen to songs that have always moved you and wake up a few times a day to smile at the faces of the loving ones who surround you. Go home and have your dog lie on the bed with you and open the blinds each day to watch your own neighborhood and your own yard. Sleep while your heart keeps beating and beating while your nails turn dark and then pink again while your breathing gets ragged and then smooth again. And then one morning speak softly to your children and just... Stop. Very beautiful and so wise. I'm going to post what you wrote on FTD - gives people something to think about. I'm sorry about Sylvia. Really am. But glad she lived well despite the odds. Lots of love to you and your mom and your family. SRA very nice and thought provoking. I'm sorry about Sylvia. You're definitely sad missing her.. but I guess we shouldn't be... She had a wonderful life and understood the meaning of it. That's what matters. Minerva sent me down and this is just beautiful!Minerva has the same courage! The last sentence is so sad thoughGoodbyes are so hard. Why do they call them "good" anyways?..... Terry Thank you all for your comments and your warm thoughts. Sylvia was a really amazing person and an inspiration to me. It means a lot to know that this post touches others because I think it really has the essence of her. I've stopped in from Minerva's too what a beautiful way to remember and give tribute to your Aunt. And the entire time I was reading this I kept hearing Eric Clapton in the background of my mind playing. Son and Sylvia x I am also here from Minerva's blog to say what a very nice post about a very nice lady. Keep living until it's time to stop - the only message we can give to people fighting the C Battle cq Beautiful and inspiring and very moving too! One can take a lot from this even if you don't have cancer.... Anyone with any kind of Health Issues can be deeply comforted and inspired by this. Thank You So Very Much. Your Aunt Sylvie and you and Minerva---yesk I came from there are ALL incredibly inspirational and comforting too!My heart goes out to you in your deep loss... But what a gift Sylvie was....! My sympathies to you. Your writing is beautiful and you described your aunt and your love and admiration for her wonderfully. Thank you for sharing that. Jenny. I also found my way here via Minerva's blog. Your aunt Sylvia sounds like some woman and this story really strikes alot of chords with me. I wish that I could live and die with such grace. Love to you,Deexxx Sylvia was indeed special. I wish you could have known her when she was a teenager. Able to laugh hysterically 'til everyone around her was "bustin' a gut" as she used to say and she could cry with such deep sorrow in her eyes that your heart would break your own eyes would tear and soon you'd be part of a sobbing duet or trio or... She's one of the few people I've been blessed to know whose life as an adult was as bubbling over as when she was much younger and it was impossible to dwell on your own issues with her around. When I think of her. I can only see her with her wide smile and back-of-the-throat giggles building into loud laughter. I hope she's forgiven me for having made her laugh in the hospital after her teenage appendectomy burst some stitches and having to stay a few days longer than she had wanted. You've done such a beautiful job capturing the spirit of the girl/woman I was blessed to know. Thank you. I can only believe that she is smiling warmly at your loving words. I was diagnosed with breast cancer just a month after I turned 39. I had a lumpectomy chemotherapy and radiation from March through October. 2006. So far my subsequent check-ups continue to say my body is cancer-free. Of course once you've had cancer you're never fully free of it--but life does go on sometimes even better than before!

I'm having a bad day. Charge does undergo cancer again. It is a stage 2 mast cell tumor. She's had it once before and typically they have a 30% come about of living 70 months. It's been 3-5 years (I can't remember) since her last mast cell tumor. She's going approve in for surgery on Tuesday. They said it might be localized but that if a dog has it more than once it's not unusual for it to be systemic. They are going to do an ultrasound on her spleen to see if she has them there too and ordain be doing a CBC with a special additional test to see if mast cells are in her daub. They are taking another inch margin all the way around so she'll undergo about a 3-4 advance incision all the way around not counting the go across. They said it was "a good accumulate". Poor little girl. I'm so sad. Anyway mast cell tumors are often related to histamines. rush has awful allergies and was on shots for a long measure. So check this out they want her on 100mg of Bendryal a day until a few days after her surgery. Imagine treating cancer with Benadryl. Isn't that neat? Plus it ordain keep her calmer. They are hoping to have the U/S on the same day as the surgery but aren't sure if they can get the U/S guy there on that day so we'll see. I'm so sad. To top things off. I'm babysitting my friend's dogs you know the groomer/pyr breeder who watches Chammie every day. Anyway she was given a dog by an older lady who couldn't care for him anymore and he was too aggressive for her to handle. He's a two year old wheaton and is really cute and acts nice until he bites you. He bit his 8th person in 3 months yesterday so he is scheduled to be PTS on Monday. It's like being on a death check. It's the right thing to do but it's awful. I could use a hug. In request to really enjoy a dog one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. They take in bring through dogs at the shelter and rehab them and then adopt them out but this little springer was turning and biting people for no reason either. One minute it was a nice sweet dog then the next is was biting someone. They just euthanized him. And sending a couple of more big hugs to both Julies for having bad days. LOVES them. I'm actually watching him at her house. She only lives a mile away and I'm going over a few times a day. Her dogs are adorable. And she has 5 chickens. "The girls". They are the nicest chickens. They loved to be petted and picked up and two of them lay weird colored eggs-pink blue and green. I swear. It's true. They are some breed from South America. I can't remember the name but it starts with "a". Arancuna or something. It's fun feeding chickens. They laid 3 eggs for me today. Big hugs to both you and rush. I hope everything goes well with her surgery and that they can do the U/S at the same measure. The poor Wheaten. Michael was just telling me about a similar situation at his bring home the bacon. They act in rescue dogs at the kennel and rehab them and then adopt them out but this little springer was turning and biting populate for no reason either. One minute it was a nice sweet dog then the next is was biting someone. They just euthanized him. And sending a couple of more big hugs to both Julies for having bad days. I'm sorry too to hear about rush's results,Mast cell tumors are scarey things we went thru that with Magic last year, knock on wood none since then. I hope that it is localized and not systemic. BIG HUGS your way coming. Sorry to hear about the Weaton too. That's hard, somtimes it would be nice to be Dr Dolittle and find out what the problem is and fix it. It's times like this that people undergo to go first, and if he is biting and has some kind of mental problem,it is probably for the best create he's not a happy camper either.
