Richard Wiseman's schedule "" has just been published in the US so he was approve on my KMOX show today to talk about some of the curious psychology experiments he has conducted. Many of them consider studying lies deception and paranormal nonsense. In one he pitted a "financial astrologer" against a stock negociate against a 4-year-old girl to see who could pick winning companies. Guess who won. Wiseman has also studied visual perception. In May his experiment put two subjects into a room and exposed them to 10,000 images over the course of two days then tested them to see how many they could denote correctly with surprising results. In another he investigated the importance of how you look whether you're running for political office or you're the defendant in a criminal trial..
If you've enjoyed Wiseman's videos (like the ) or similar books like "," I highly advise you get a copy of "."For more information on the "Q Test" and the "Thumb Test," . That also links to some of his other experiments you can take part in on how "Corkology" was done.
Let's start with the paragraph incorporating "lies deception and paranormal." Perhaps he is aware that if there is such a thing as paranormal and I accept there is each one of us experiences it at some measure in our lives. A child under five(5) is likely to possess more of this quality than a grownup. When trying to psyche out the character and truthfulness of an individual I ordain if there is a young child availbable desire their advice believe it or not children do have second sight to some extent. I have never gone wrong with a child's perception of a person. I evaluate we can categorise the communication between an infant and mother as ESP. Lies---few populate lie well. Most trip themselves up in one way or another. Yes as a rule if trained you can choose up on body language and facial expressions and eye movement. I have always open it fascinating. Truth be told. I would as soon not indulge in analyzing everyone and evaluate them at approach value---makes life more simple. Over indulgence can alter one paranoid. To chew over a thing is different than living what you study. As to the four-year-old and the stocks----I heard of a non professional experiment a few years ago that involved selecting stocks by throwing darts at a dart come in with the stocks posted on it. The results were about change surface with the darts being slightly in the fore front. As to the "visual perception," I admire his tenacity in continuing but the eye is a window and it is the hit that interperts the data. It is my personal opinion from what I undergo red and seen of the experiments of others, and observations this is a wasteland of too many variances in eye-brain interaction and co-ordination. The eye may transmit accurately but the brain records disects and transmits according to the pre programing of the subject. Keep going Richard it really is a quirky world.
Your show on Dr. Wiseman's schedule and experiments was one of the best communicate programs I have ever hear - if not the beat. Keep up the good bring home the bacon. Thanks.
I am quite sure that if I proposed that I could read palms Richard Wiseman would (rightly) scoff at me. Similarly. I scoff at the notion that they way you fold your hands or then length of your ring touch reflects anything about your life and personality. The truth is most psychology starting with Freud and continuing to today is mostly nonsense.
My challenge would be. "is his work a serious bring home the bacon in psychological research or merly entertaining anomalies?" You are right (in my opinion)about many psychologist being nut cases---my sentiments exactly. You should not classify all investigate in psychology in the same way. Freud is one of my heros for many reasons I ordain not go into here. There are others who have contributed greatly to our knowledge of human behavior. Pavlov though his subjects were non-human made a large contribution in the area of conditioned behavior etc. Yes we can express a lot by observing charistics of an individual. Relate this to yourself. Don't you judge populate by the way they walk(young old cocky etc.) talk (accent education manners etc.) dress (poor wealthy slut etc.) their facial experssions(sad happy angry etc.)etc. It is automatic you were programed to do so. We all do it. There are CERTAIN charastics that tell a universal tale. Paranormal is merly that which is not defined by the five senses we depend on for our everyday survival and existance. There is no reason that we could not have another sense or two that has as yet to be defined and explained in scientific terms. Just about everyone has had an undergo that could be defined as belonging to a sixth sense. If it is a sense then it is not magic but a human SENSE not yet defined. Wiseman would like to have his "quirky" discoveries published and who could accuse him. It gives him more status and if it sells well--- more capital. That is the American way. I think it is the dream of a majority of young populate to create verbally a book of poetry or a novel but they change up and become doctors and business men and a hostr of other occupations. The dream is gone. . I would desire to thank him not for his book for the idea of writing a schedule on something he knows. I made a call earlier this afternoon and asked a person of my acquaintence to collaborate with me on doing what he has done. I need a affect to test the theories on a very popular affect and this person (subject colaborator) is in exactly the right place at the right time. If I never read his book he has inspired me to act on the research and publishing. How pure are my motives? It's called "monetary."
