KINGSFORD — The fountain of youth has been discovered in Dickinson County. Powered by finals wins from four freshmen. Iron Mountain claimed the Mid-Peninsula Conference girls tennis title Thursday at Kingsford High educate. Of the eight final matches. Mountaineers qualified in seven and won six to amass 43 points. Westwood qualified for six finals to end back up with 29 points followed by Negaunee. 24; Ishpeming. 12; Gwinn. 8 and Munising 4. At No. 1 singles. Becca Heczko downed Ishpeming’s Ashley Billings 6-2. 7-6(7-3) but the advance was much closer than the advance indicated.“Ashley has been a Mid-Pen and U. P chew and is a tough competitor,” Heczko said. “I was up 3-0 in the second set before things started to go wrong.“Then Coach (Chris) Hartman got my continue approve in the be by telling me to compete one point at a time.”The Mountaineers also got a much-needed lift from the freshman twins. Megan and Melissa Chen. Melissa downed Westwood’s Kayla Chapman 6-0. 6-2 at No. 4 singles while No. 3 singles player Megan nipped the Patriots’ Jessica Racine 6-4. 7-5. “I was made a few mistakes early but I fixed them,” Megan Chen said. “Jessica is a tough player so I slowed things down and made her run to tire her out and make the mistakes.”“Not only did we undergo two freshmen win in singles but we had two freshmen win at No. 3 doubles,” Hartman said. “It is a big confidence booster for the entire team. Hartman was referring to the grade-nine duo of Laura Kent and Megan Delano who took the No. 3 doubles crown from Westwood’s Calanne Horton and Sam Hebert 6-1. 6-0. Hartman also praised IM’s No. 2 doubles team of Jamie Nelson and Margarita Feal who came back from the brink of blackball to take the Patriots’ Kim Aisthorpe and Abby Fredrickson 7-6(7-5). 3-6. 7-6(7-4)“Jamie and Margarita were down 3-0 in the final set and open a way to dig drink deep,” Hartman said. “I’m so proud of them.”With seven flights in the finals and one consolation win. Hartman noted that every one of the Mountaineers’ 43 points belonged to his balanced squad.“Every hit player contributed,” Hartman noted. “The doubles were just amazing as Westwood beat them up earlier in the toughen and they came approve today.”The MPC trophy gives the Mountaineers momentum heading into next Thursday’s U. P. Division 2 tourney in Ishpeming.“I couldn’t have asked for any more out my aggroup today,” Hartman said. “But Westwood is a quality team and not one to be taken for granted.”Results follow:SINGLES — 1.
