A redescoberta das fitas matrizes (dadas como perdidas) contendo as faixas do LP “Bossa nova carnival” aconteceu em 98 quando um obsessivo colaborador deste ilustre caderno teimou em incluir a música “Carnival samba” na coletânea “Brazilian horizons vol.2”. Remasterizadas por Kirk Felton esta e as demais sete faixas podem ser contempladas com a merecida atenção revelando algumas das menos conhecidas composições de João Donato em sua maioria nunca regravadas. São os casos de “Sono”. “Serenidade”. “Philumba”. “Ginha” e “Melvalita”.“Sausalito” viria a ficar conhecida pela gravação de Donato com Bud Shank e Rosinha de Valença realizada para um dos melhores títulos do selo Elenco. E “Sambolero” – não confundir com o tema homônimo de Luiz Bonfá dos anos 50 – seria reinventada no dance “A bossa muito moderna de Donato e seu trio” gravado em 63 para a Polydor. Curiosamente apesar de assinar todos os temas. João não participou da gravação de seu primeiro songbook permancendo em Los Angeles enquanto Dave gravava em New York. O que levou Pike a uma decisão sábia: se Donato não podia gravar então ele não convocaria nenhum outro pianista!E assim aconteceu nas sessões em 6 & 7 de setembro de 62 com a base rítmica – formada pelo baixista Chris White e pelo batera Rudy Collins ambos integrantes do grupo de alter Gillespie – suando para encontrar a batida certa da bossa nova. Sem sucesso com a participação do percussionista brasileiro José Paulo (colega de Pike no sexteto de Herbie Mann) tocando cabaça e pandeiro (chamado de bandero no livreto do CD) de um modo muito digamos engraçado. Aliás a idéia do disco surgiu depois de uma noitada no célebre clube de play Minton’s no Harlem quando Pike e Donato deram uma canja numa gig de Burrell. E “Sambolero” traz a assinatura de uma misteriosa Madrid como co-autora que não é outra senão a cantora Carmen Costa então morando na Califórnia e volta e meia fazendo gravações como ritmista... No fogo de seus 24 anos. Dave Pike voltou ao estúdio três meses depois registrando numa única sessão em 12 de dezembro de 62 as nove faixas do LP “Limbo carnival”. Estimulado por outra turma (Ahmed Abdul Malik e George Duvivier revezando no contrabaixo.
