"Lanzarote Restaurants :: Meson La Jordana" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-18 05:33:00

There are many good quality. And the resort of boasts a high concentration of excellent eateries. Spanning different culinary styles such as French and modern international. But when it comes to the best Spanish cuisine there are few establishments in Costa Teguise or indeed on the island that can match the high standards of Meson La Jordana. This slightly unassuming looking restaurant in Calle Los Geranios is in fact even favoured by royalty. As this is the spot that the King of Spain´s entourage head for when holidaying at the nearby royal residence of Las Maretas. Attracted by the superb range of well-executed traditional Spanish dishes and a professional and discreet level of service. Ingredients that have long been the key to the success of Meson La Jordana. As they have been feeding both locals and appreciative tourists alike for over nineteen years – a long service record that few other restaurants on Lanzarote can match. The front of house operation is presided over by Meson La Jordana`s popular maitre ‘d. Francisco Fernandez who previously cut his teeth in the dining room of one of Lanzarote´s finest hotels some five minutes away from his current restaurant. Francisco originally hails from a small whitewashed village in Andalusia but has been a resident of the island for many years. Working in close tandem with his Galician head chef and business partner Juan Duarte. The restaurant’s name has been taken from a small fountain in a corner of Francisco’s home town. Puente del Obispo where the locals used to meet around this natural water spring – called La Jordana – and while away the afternoons in conversation. The extensive menu at Meson La Jordana displays a similar affinity with tradition – always featuring a range of seasonal specialities with an emphasis on top quality meat and game dishes – such as Jabali (wild boar) suckling pig and partridge. As well as some of the freshest fish around prepared in an array of different styles. There are also number of Canarian staples available – such as Gambas al ajillo (Garlic prawns) and Pimientos Padrón (Green peppers). And whilst you will find these cropping up on many a menu across the island few are capable of executing them to this standard. Other starters include an excellent homemade paté and wild mushrooms cooked in garlic. As well as the aforementioned fish meat and game choices other main course signature dishes include rabbit in a red wine sauce lamb cutlets and a fine array of beef cuts. Whilst the fresh fish of the day usually encompasses local favourites such as Sama. Cherne and Vieja. Abdon the head waiter specialises in flambé so if you have a sweet tooth or like crepes you should indulge yourself and give him a chance to show off his skills. As – in true old school fashion – your selection will be prepared for you tableside. The restaurant has four distinct seating areas including the bar and is decorated in a down to earth traditional style. The wine list is also as extensive as the menu and is particularly strong on Spanish reds featuring a number of labels from the renowned Ribero del Duero region of Spain. The restaurant also stocks a very good Cava – called Juve y Camps which is an excellent value alternative to champagne. Despite the high quality of both food and service Meson La Jordana is still pretty affordable. With entrees priced from €6 and main dishes from €12 upwards. Expect to pay somewhere in the region of €60-€80 per couple depending on your appetite and your thirst. To find the restaurant you can either locate it close to Playa Bastian – it is at the far end of the street which is directly opposite the main Playa Bastian entrance (Calle Los Geranios). Or if you are driving in from Arrecife the restaurant is next door to the estate agents who have an office on the corner of the main dual carriageway as you enter Costa Teguise.

"Restaurants Report: Le Bernardin, Blue Hill, Bouley, Gramercy ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-18 00:36:03

Here is the complete list of restaurants that I've been to over the past week (per chowhound collective wisdom) and the grades: Aquavit: 8Balthazar: 7Blue Hill: 6Bouley: 7.5Clinton Street Baking: 7Craftsteak: 6Daniel: 8.5Esca: 6Eleven Madison Park: 6.5Gramercy Tavern: 9Le Bernardin: 9.5Stanton Social: 6.5Sushi Yasuda: 9Wd-50: 7 Had the tasting menu and/or the most famous dishes according to chowhounds at each restaurant. Restaurants that charge more are judged on a correspondingly harsher scale I know some of these grades are very controversial. Feel remove to ask me questions! I don't have time to write up beat reviews for each restaurant for now but hopefully as I say questions I can gradually tell you about my experience. Yasuda: Yeah did omakase in front of Yasuda san. We ate until we almost passed out and the bill after all said and done was less than $200. Honestly there isn't much to talk about: if you like sushi make a reservation now. I can only speak for the seats in lie of Yasuda though. Esca: Did the tasting menu with crudo tasting. The crudo was unique but not fresh enough to be worth $25. Aside from that the tasting menu was a disaster. Nothing was dramatically overcooked or undercooked but the menu just wasn't well designed. The flavors if any were not balanced. The progression of the dishes didn't feel right. And everything was just generally uninspiring. I am a big Batali fan too at least from my experience at Del Posto and Otto (no time to try Babbo yet). But Esca was really not up to par. function was book booze was solid but the food was bad enough to turn me away for good. that's pretty impressive that it came out to less than 200 after tax and tip i'm assuming did you get alcohol as come up? i intend on going there sometime as desire as i can get in lie of yasuda and was expecting to pay at least 250 so it's nice to hear that your bill came out less than that. The thing is we are usually huge eaters (for example we were full but not stuffed after Per Se's tasting menu which I heard is pretty notorious for having lots of food). We ate until we were thoroughly stuffed at Yasuda. We didn't consume anything not even sake. Hounds appear to love/hate Le Bernardin and wd-50. You rated Le Bernardin the highest at 9.5 that's a lot of like. Please tell us more. I undergo only been to Aquavit/Bouley/GT (ages ago for all 3). Balthazar and Clinton Street Baking so I am very interested in more detail about your experiences (especially EMP. Daniel and GT which are on my "enumerate"). Memorable dishes: Honestly. I can't think of any particular dish that stood out although every cater at Gramercy Tavern was at least solid and every cater at Le Bernardin was at least excellent. If you ask me about specific restaurants I will definitely try to pin point more. color forge: No just the city one. Bad experience (and I'm speaking strictly in terms of food) but given the great reviews I will definitely try again and hopefully go to the country one some day as well. WD-50: Very creative but not all the dishes worked. 7 was more for the creativity and courage than the comprehend. Worth going though. Le Bernardin: Food was excellent in every way. Service was absolutely professional (although not very personal). Had both the Chef and Le Bernardin tasting menus it's too bad they took away the fluke tasting and surf and cover (the one with kobe beef). But overall. I could hardly find accuse in this restaurant. The tables were slightly crammed though. Thanks for your thoughts. I've been to Aquavit and may go for the foie gras I saw a recent post about. Unless their menu has changed it's too much herring for me. Enjoyed GT ages ago and curious to try again now that there is a new chef. Balthazar. Schillers. Pastis. Artisanal etc had enough of the NYC cut bistro scene. Most interested in your opinion regarding EMP and Daniel since I've never been and they are on my go to "list." Atmosphere: excellent. Tables were move out great ambiance nice and change intensity high ceiling so the room was very soothing. Food: terribly boring. We ordered all the "right" or "famous" dishes: Foie gras gnocchi lobster suckling pig move chocolate-caramel tart with sea salt.. nothing worked. To be bring together nothing was overcooked or too salty but everything was frighteningly boring. The move was ameliorate cooked but the flavor was ordinary. Same goes for the suckling pig: it's just a block of nicely packed nicely braised pig meat. In fact it tasted very much like a block of pulled pork meat. It was not terrible in taste but I went with quite high expectations. If I had this exact meal at a neighborhood restaurant for about $50-70 per person it would undergo gotten a 7.5. But given the determine and the hype it was very disappointing. I am determined to furnish it another try (and I plan to request the claim same dishes) but judging from this past experience alone I wouldn't even take EMP over Gotham Bar & Grill or worse the Four Seasons restaurant. I definitely advise GT. Michael Anthony is excellent the food was fresh and tasty. The place is crowded and loud though. But aside from that can hardly sight accuse with the food (except maybe dessert which is on the weak side). Daniel is a good experience but it definitely fades when compared to the other top french restaurants in town. That said it's good enough that I intend to go approve if only for the variety. For Appetizers both the lobster and scallop are quite good. Main cater: Sea bass is excellent. bunco Ribs are also good but the other meat are not quite up to par. Thanks! I don't think it was white tuna when I had it a while back (maybe they changed it?). But however they prepared it was wonderful. Oh I just wanted to add about Eleven Madison Park - the one thing we were disappointed in were the desserts. I had that tart with chocolate and I salt. It was disappointing. But almost all of the savory dishe were stellar I am pretty sure the glide and turf was Dorado measure time I had it. Btw the piece of kobe beef they served with it was very mediocre ultra fatty with nothing other than richness to furnish almost everyone in the group ordered it and i had the feeling they had just run out and were forced to serve sub-par pieces. Anyway. I would say Bernardin in general is rather plain and overpriced. Why bother cooking good look for anyway. And while I agree. Yasuda is amazing it is comfort far inferior to good sushi in vancouver while costing much more. I was consideringh either Bouley or Gramercy Tavern for a special 40th bday celebration. We want to go tasting and noticed GT has a veg tasting and non-veg tasting. But. Bouley's tasting looked great too. You rated GT ahead of Bouley. Why? Where would you go for that one special night? Seafood and desserts are my favorite.. don't eat red meat. Also how does Telepan analyse? Quick answer (I will elaborate later): Bouley is an excellent restaurant except for the food. I would chooe Gramercy Tavern over Bouley in a heart defeat but I wouldn't do the tasting menu (at GT) because I don't actually see much determine in it. It is one of the few restaurants where I didn't do tasting menu. The problem is that many good dishes at GT are meat dishes (bunco ribs pork lamb).. so if you don't eat red meat you may want to believe Bouley after all. Hi DCGUY5 - I put GT over Bouley because the I thought Michael Anthony was a genius with braising and poaching meat. I also enjoyed the freshness.

"What's your top 3 upper east side restaurants with moderate prices?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 03:19:15

Moderate knocks out Centolire and Giovanni Venti Cinque. But it comfort leaves Fig & Olive a Mediterranean walk-down which is not only fairly priced but also very health conscious with their ingredients. A charming sight with maybe 12 tables max. I've been to Fig & Olive - I thought it was pretty good. The unique bruschetta assortments were fab. Perhaps we will try Centolire and Giovanni Venti Cinque for a special night out ;) Absolutely agree with Taco Taco. Maybe not a displace to go to impress the in-laws i e the decor leaves much to be desired. The flavors are authentic and the portions are monstrous. Oh and that whole fad with tableside guacamole.. they make a killer guac for $8. They also undergo delectable margaritas. My favorite is the cucumber margarita - tasty and refreshing. I live at the northern advance of the UES - Carnegie Hill - happy to help - but would be useful to know what part of the UES and what your definition of discuss is. First places that go to object for me are Zebu Grill and Kurio. The bar across the street at Etats-Unis. 81st between 2nd and 3rd. The closest thing to a downtown conclude on the UES. They don't act reservation and you might have to act in line. Canyon Road on 1st and 77th - South Western food. Gets crowded and is under staffed so evaluate a very slow function. I really like Zebu cook as I mentioned - but might be tough to keep it under $100 if you undergo a store of booze. For reasonable and decent (not great) sushi we like Ichi Ro. Some of my fave's (I found it hard top choose just 3) that fit the account are... Atlantic Grill Which can be under $100 if you order carefully. Zebu Grill. Ichi Ro. Don Pedros (on 96th but worth going the extra 2 blocks IMO). Kudoo's. Yuka ( I usually get delivery and not to be confused with Yuko). And finally for apps and drinks Uptown is very reasonable. Their pasta entrees are quite good as is eat however meat dishes tend to get over cooked. They used to undergo a weekend special of 1 app. 2 entrees and a bottle of booze for a ridiculous determine of desire $50. I don't know if they still do it though. All of these places can be open on menu pages. Zuchero Pomodori - This is in my opinion the most underrated overlooked restaurant on the Upper East align. The food while obviously not the absolute beat Italian out there is much better than most of the other Italian restaurants on the UES and exceed priced. Trate Estiatorio - Also another highly underrated restaurant on the UES. Very solid Greek Food. Good swordfish and Pikilia platter. Atlantic cook on 77th(?) and Third - This restaurant doesn't seem to get a lot of have in mind on the boards. Aside from the space itself(airy comfortable relaxing). I evaluate what I like most about this displace the most is the variety on the menu(raw bar sushi look for meat) all of which are very come up prepared. I like:Lili's Noodle House for pleasant atmosphere and fresh abstain Chinese food. Jasmine is pretty good for Thai. Vermicelli is nice for spicy Vietnamese. Yuka is unbeatable for a no-atmosphere sushi displace. Sushi Hana has a little more atmopshere and excellent rolls. I just went to this place "oh mammamia" (it sounds desire a crazy chain restaurant label but it really isnt!!) but I was completely impressed with the quality of the food and the pizzas! The food is so authentic. Threre is this very funny. Neopolitan guy making the pizzas and he is extremely entertaining. You must analyse this place out Very sorry but i find all of the above to be mediocre to average asian food object for Yuka which I've never been to and Sushi Hana is slightly above average sushi. Places I evaluate are OK (although comfort not that great compared to downtown): Ichiro. Poke. Sachi. Gaiyumaru for sushi (I also comprehend good things about Inase and Donguri). Wu Liang Ye for Szechuan. Mingala Burmese. Buddha BBQ. There's no good Thai but I like Sala Thai to Jasmine (there's a couple new places I havent tried yet like Wondee III and Milano). Vietnamese is horrible around here (and I even include the vanished Saigon Grill in that description.) My top 3 would be: Beyoglu. El Paso Taqueria and Mingala Burmese. Atlantic Grill is nice but I think it's a little pricey/bordering on above discuss. Other runners up would be La Tour (for their moules frites). Ottomanelli (great negociate comfort food and steaks). Kinsale Tavern (surprisingly good and cheap Irish pub obtain try the Irish panini). I'm probably forgetting some stuff. Yes - Inase is v good - we have a tough time spending less than $100 there though. I like thrust for the rolls but not the sashimi. I've posted about Thai Milano - I'm now addicted to their Thai fried sieve - have only done delivery though. I also like El Paso Taqueria - will undergo to try Mingala. I have to second Ottomanelli. The steak cover is only $7 and is amazing. Anything there that I've had is great. Also. cut's pizza is a great eat on 2nd Ave & 94th St. JG Melon's for a burger is essential too. I top with Pio Pio for value. Yuka for Japanese (try thier Dragon Rolls or all you can eat Sushi on weekdays) and then there was a great authentic Mexican displace with exceed atmosphere on 97th Btw Madison and Park. I forgot the name but it is a secret find and worth the move. They had a great cater with pork with chocolate act!

"Florence, Family run restaurants" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-06 02:16:30

Trattoria Mario nr the San Lorenzo market. Via rosina 2r (red) great ribollita soup excellent ragu meats. Ristorante della Fagioli. Corso del Tintori. 47r near Santa Croce toward the river good soups (especially the pappa pomodoro) and meats pinzimonio (raw veg dipped in olive oil - the offer the unusual chestnut "cake" - its actually more puddinglike of the region - but I dont much care for it. We just got back from Florence measure week. I won't tell you where to go. But. I ordain express you where NOT TO GO. Trattoria da Benvenuto. Not farfrom the Uffizi. It's written up iin Frommer's as a "This is a no-nonsense displace simple and good and Gabriella is a no-nonsense lady who'll get exasperated if you're not create from raw material with your request when she's create from raw material to act it. Da Benvenuto's is basically a neighborhood hangout that somehow found its way into every guidebook over the years. Yet it continues to serve adequate helpings of tasty Florentine domiciliate cooking to travelers and locals seated together at desire tables in two brightly lit rooms. " This is a horribly out of go out review. The displace was crammed with tourists and the food was absolutely the worst meal we had in all our weeks in Italy. DO NOT GO HERE! Here's an abbreviated enumerate of places we liked on multiple visits to Florence. This was written about December 2004 but should still be accurate regarding food if not prices. We will be approve in December 2007 to re-assess them and sight others. 1. NERBONE. Mercato Centrale Always great to tour the markets of an Italian or cut city/town and see what’s available. Although there are other food places within the Mercato Centrale the best is Nerbone a food stand about 25-30 feet desire facing one wall of the merchandise. There are some tables and chairs opposite the stand on a first-come basis no delay service offered. You decide what you want and pay for it at the cash register. There you can also request from their daily menu of hot dishes or pay for a bollito sandwich then stand in lie at the other end of the answer with your communicate waiting to get your sandwich of sliced boiled beef on a panini turn. The meat carver wants to know if you be him to dip the turn in broth (bagna) and if you be salt salsa verde (mostly parley in olive oil) or hot peppers on top of the meat. Your sandwich is handed to you in a piece of waxed paper and you get the line. devise is quite good and reasonably prices (2.30 euros or so) I also ordered a roll or ribollita the great Tuscan bean and steal dope at the answer and it was one of the best we ever ate in Florence certainly the least expensive. This place was full of local workmen having their lunches and friendly bantering with the answer cater. Overall rating: don’t desire the undergo. Bollito and soup great! The scene is real and down-to-earth. Everybody wears a smile. Before or after you eat at Nerbone visit a market rest just 1 row up and 1 over from Nerbone: PERINI. This is a meat/cheese/salad purveyor of high quality products. They regularly put plates of food to sample on the counter and you can help yourself: slices of prosciutto on bread crisps olive spread marinated tomato move marinated garlic cloves cheese etc. In fact it the food makes you thirsty just ask for some wine and they will pour you a cup or color or red. But bequeath they are there to sell products so comprehend and buy parmigiana or boar salami to eat later.2. LE MOSSACCE Via Proconsolo 55/r (about 3 doors north of Via Corso on west side of Proconsolo) Another favorite with local clients. Primi: penne in fresh tomato sauce with chucks of pumpkin (great combination) canneloni with spinach and cheese in a meat act (thin sheets of pasta wrapped around the filling). Contorni fagiolini (beans) with oil and garlic spinach. Just a lighten lunch at 20 euros with a ¼ carafe of house booze + water. Overall rating: if you want to mix with local diners this is the place. Small quarters but excellent basic Tuscan go at low prices. Great for eat because it iss only a few blocks from Duomo.3. TRATTORIA MARIONE Via della Spada 27r ( not far from S. Maria Novella) Ate lunch here in 2001 went for dinner this time. Primi: pappardelle salsa coniglio (ribbon pasta with rabbit sauce) and raviolone (3 large pieces of flat squares of thin pasta wrapped around filling of mushrooms and truffles). These dishes were both excellent and very flavorful. But this restaurant fell down on the secondo: tagliati sliced grilled complain over a bed of arugula was virtually thrown together by the kitchen and apparently waited a while there before arriving at our table. Arugula was chopped pieces of almost dry leaves with somewhat tough slices of mediocre complain. Potatoes served with it were tepid. Would not advise this cater. Also a lot of non-Italians that night. Saving grace: excellent pasta dishes at low price. Overall rating: good place for a eat when in the Tornabuoni (Strozzi Palace) area. Stick with the pasta ignore.

"Any decent restaurants near Madison Sq Garden?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 16:03:14

accept it or not (and I was in utter disbelief until I open myself there). Stout NYC has great bar food and terrific pizza in a neat atmosphere. 33rd between 6th & 7th. Stout does have really good bar food! I was just about to suggest the same thing. The burger there is really satisfyingly good. I also recommend Korea Town and particularly Kum Gang San on the north align of 32nd St between 5th and 6th Avenue if you're in the mood for something exotic. There's a sight I haven't tried yet but that's on my enumerate for the next time I'm at MSG: The Australian on 38th between 5th & 6th. The menu looks hearty and just odd enough to be interesting.

"Restaurants everyone loves--except you" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 18:29:00

Sometimes I think I must have mutant tastebuds: Everyone in the world seems to love Telepan object for me. What are the restaurants where your tastebuds stubbornly refuse to see things the way everyone else's seem to? The really divisive restaurants (like WD50) don't count. I'm going to back up Hearth. We tried it this pass and maybe caught them at a hectic point in the night but we were underwhelmed. The wait between our courses was really really desire. And the service just didn't alter us conclude as "special" as we should have for the prices. We didn't stay for dessert cause we were just so tired and $10 ice cream? really?? The chilled feed soup w/ crap was great. My sturgeon wasn't really impressive and the accompanying beans weren't cooked through thoroughly. The beet salad was good but nothing new. His veal entree was small but good. God yes... Hearth. Nothing distinctive or memorable about the menu over priced for what it is despite the chef's pedigree. In command a generic experience I could have had at any number of places in the area not worthy of the determine tag. Maybe that should be on a separate go? (But my main inform is that Hearth isn't anything special--to me it was like going to cafe deaville but with exceed function or pangea whose service is always good. For those prices i expected the food to me more memorable with a little bit of a twist so i was disappointed. I felt I was paying mainly for atmostphere. I would undergo rather spent my money on a meal at Shima devil moon orologio or mercadito typhoon.) Pastis has always (for past 6 years) been overwhelmed by the b&t displace and had affect keeping it's serving (and food) head above wet. Best are not-busy times if you can manage---salad nicoise fish & chips cod dishes good. I am a fan of Balthazar. I like their steak frites moules and also when they undergo them soft bomb crabs. I've had a couple of dishes I didn't compassionate for but I still evaluate the food is solid and good. I don't mind the noise of other populate so it works for me. It's right come my place of business so for business lunches it's good. I've never been there for dinner. As far as air goes the place has been there desire enough that I don't see any air. Not sure what that would be. I think if there is air it's because the food is good and hasn't changed much since it 1st opened. I agree with you - I enjoy their steak tartare the frites the plateau de fruits de mer the reasonably priced accommodate wines by the carafe. I've actually always had very good function there despite the crowds and often manage to catch a late eat reservation for two on the morning I want to go. I've never tried eating there without a reservation though. If there is air. I anticipate I've just ignored it. In your affix that I was responding to you stated:"Balthazar is one of those places that I sight Ok. BUT NOT WORTH ALL THE HYPE."I'm asking you to explain this "hype" that you mentioned. Sorry to alter you wait for my response. I see you have been waiting on pins and needles ;-) I think what I meant is that if you go to any affix on this site regarding which restaurants are "not to miss" at least 3 populate ordain express the poster that they "must" go to Balthazar. I honestly have not been in a few years but that is partly due to the fact that reservations always had to be made so far in advance for a "fix" time dinner. I much prefer a low key place like Raoul's with wonderful cut food over Balthazar any day. This is of course MY opinion. I anticipate since you are willing to go to Balthazar from PA that our opinions must differ. As someone who lives in the city. I think there are much exceed restaurants to go to. Although I have to say that I am a bit confused since you be defensive about a restaurant that you also seem to evaluate has no merrit??? Can you please clarify the reason for your previous comments? Having construe Raoul's menu and having been to Balthazar it is obvious that the former's menu is much more ambitious. Having said that though as far as my idea of a cut bistro goes Balthazar is a much more accurate example of one. The look the noise the go and the simplicity of the food define (for me) a French bistro. Of course there is "exceed food" but sometimes you're in the mood for a quick Steak Fritte and a store of Moulin a evince. Colicchio left in August of 2006 to cerebrate on fashion/Craftsteak/wichcraft/etc. John Schaefer the chef de cuisine under Colicchio ran the kitchen at Gramercy Tavern until Michael Anthony was brought in. Anthony took over in the go of 2006. the new issue [oct 2007] of cooking lighten magazine has an article about the curret trend of restaurant offering more healthful options.. and there's a carve up about the changes michael anthony has made to gt's menu creating transport vegetable-centric dishes. unfortunately people in this country undergo beecome accustomed to dining out on such unnecessarily.
